Supporting with learning English, one of the key elements of integration into UK society, in order to encourage self-sufficiency and enhance access to opportunities

RETAS continues to see increasing numbers of service users needing significant support with their English, which has led to us running a programme of ESOL classes, from Pre-Entry level to Level 1.

ESOL stands for English for Speakers of Other Languages which highlights the targeted way in which we deliver these classes for our service users.

These classes are run by qualified ESOL teachers who are experienced in teaching English as a foreign language. They are often assisted by learning support assistants, many of whom can also support students by acting as interpreters.

These English classes aim to support with the crucial language skills which support learners to have greater confidence and thus a stronger ability to integrate with the local community.

We also provide extra learning opportunities in the form of conversation classes, IT classes and classes centred around orientation and integration such as 'Feeling at Home' and 'Steps to Settlement'.

We also run IELTS classes for those wanting to gain this qualification needed for work or study.

How do I access English Classes?

1. Express interest in starting English classes with RETAS

This can be over the phone on 0113 3805630 or by email on info@retasleeds.org.uk
2. Be invited to complete an 'initial assessment' at the RETAS office

This is a short and informal test done by the tutors so that we can assess the level of the learner and place them in the appropriate level of class
3. Informed which level you will be at and whether there is a current space available

If we are unable to place you in a class due to space, we are aware of many free English conversation classes at other organisations which we can signpost to in the meantime
4. Invited to your first class and informed of your weekly timetable

Ideally a learner should be able to attend all sessions offered to them (usually three half days a week) but should this be a problem, it may be possible to make alternate arrangements with the learning manager
4. Attend your classes at RETAS, enjoy developing your English skills, meeting new people and progressing to higher classes at RETAS!

Adult Learning works alongside the Information Advice and Guidance that RETAS provides to support individuals to access employment and education opportunities. Learners will often see advisers outside of their class time for extra support
